Putty & Reglazing
Putty & Traditional Reglazing
Linseed oil putty is the traditional way to bed and seal glass into a timber window. Over decades it dries out, cracks and drops away, which lets water reach the timber and starts the rot cycle. Raking out the old putty and re-puttying is often all a sound single glazed window needs.
We hack out the failed putty, clean and prime the rebate, re-bed the glass, then strike a neat new fillet of linseed putty. It has to skin over for roughly two weeks before it can take paint, so we come back to prime and finish it properly. On a full restoration the reglazing is done as part of the same visit.
Re-puttying alone is usually enough when the frame is sound, the timber is dry and only the putty has perished. Full restoration is the right call when the timber is soft or spongy, the joints have moved, sashes stick or the cords have snapped.

Do you repair rotten wooden window frames, or do they have to be replaced?
Most rotten frames can be saved. We cut out only the decayed timber and splice in new treated sections, or strengthen the joints with epoxy resin. Full replacement is a last resort.
Can you repair sash windows?
Yes. We replace broken sash cords, rebalance the weights, service the pulleys and add draught-proofing so box sash windows run smoothly and seal against draughts.
Can you re-putty just one or two windows?
Yes. If the timber is sound and only the putty has perished, raking it out and re-puttying with traditional linseed putty is often all that is needed.
How long before new putty can be painted?
Linseed putty needs to skin over before it takes paint, usually about two weeks depending on the weather. We return to prime and paint once it has cured.
